Dalian Jiaotong University

Located in a charming coastal city Dalian, Dalian Jiaotong University, formerly Dalian Railway Institute, was founded in 1956. It was formerly administrated by the Ministry of Railway and was put under the administration of Liaoning Provincial Government in March 2000. With 50 years' development, it has now grown into a university of multidisciplines with engineering being its leading subject, characterized in traffic and transportation engineering, and other subjects as science, management, liberal arts, economics and science of law developing in a harmonious way. Thus the university was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council providing programs for Master's degree and Doctor's degree and now has become powerful in teaching and research capabilities. The doctorial and post-graduate programs take the lead, and the undergraduate program plays its major role in the educational system of the university, with cooperative programs with foreign universities, exchange student program, adult education, and higher vocational education being different forms of higher education. It is also evaluated as the Center of Further Education of the Railway Ministry in the Northeast and the National Training Center of Software Engineers.

The university has been carrying on reform to raise its educational standards. The goals set are definite and the stress is laid on the students' basic knowledge and competence development to nurture talented people with a creative mind, good at foreign languages and proficient in computer technology. DJTU constantly benefits from its managing strategies and gains its reputation for its unrelenting academic efforts and achievements. On the other hand, the students are more creative and vigorous in their academic pursuit, actively participating in innovative activities. They have won a remarkable place in the National Electronic Design Contest and the National College Student Mathematical Model Competition. In recent years, the rate of student employment has been up to 90% for the undergraduate and 100% for the postgraduates.

The university attaches great importance to scientific research and technological development, involving in more than 20 fields as rolling stock CAD/CAM, urban rail traffic, overhaul equipment for rolling stock, material design, welding engineering, fine ceramics, continuous extrusion and coating technology, gear drive technology, advanced manufacturing technology, onsite bussing technology and environment protection engineering. Over the past five years, the university has undertaken and accomplished more than 700 research projects, 43 of which were assigned by the State and 128 by Province or State Ministries, winning 11 prizes for the Progress of Science and Technology. The academic publications have been flourishing. More than 100 academic works by the faculty have been born and published and over 1600 research papers have come out as their scientific efforts, 120 of which were included in the international SCI, EI, and ISP. At the same time, the university has been trying its best to transform and put to use the technology of its own intellectual property right in Dalian Reil Hi-tech Industries, a company set up by DJTU.

DJTU actively involves itself in international exchange and cooperation. As a result, it has established good relations with 14 universities in Japan, USA, England, Russia and Australia etc. In 2005, there are 41 foreign teachers from 10 countries working at the university and 42 foreign teachers from 11 countries in 2006. At the same time, DJTU also actively involves itself in promoting the education for foreign students who are studying Chinese in China. Up to now, they have educated more than 1700 foreign students from nearly 4 countries which has set a good base for boosting internationalization.

Dalian Jiaotong University will still make more remarkable contributions to the growth of the regional economy and railway industry, and to the whole country in a strong will of being human centered, and going beyond excellence. It will also continue to seek sustainable development by promoting its research capabilities in order to turn itself to be one of the best among the national multidisciplinary universities.
